Midi, Maxi or Mini?

Mini, Midi, Maxi

Hama Beads are small, coloured, craft beads that can be used in various ways to create wonderful designs and beautiful pieces of art. Visit our How To page to find out how to use them.

They are available in three different size ranges – Midi, Maxi and Mini – for all ages and abilities so they can be enjoyed by everyone; male, female, young and old.

The recommended ages below are to be used only as a guide. Suitability always depends on the individual’s ability.

Please note that beads and pegboards from different size ranges are not compatible with each other.

If you are unsure which size range to order from, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Midi Beads

Undoubtedly the most popular size, Midi Beads are the regular and bestselling Hama Beads range. They are 5mm in length and diameter, with an inside diameter of 2mm – roughly the size of a ladybird. They are suitable for ages five plus, but are often a preferred size for older children and adults too and, if you’ve used Hama Beads before, this is the size you’re likely to have used.

Maxi Beads

Designed specifically for pre-schoolers, Maxi Beads are recommended for ages three to four. They are 10mm in length and diameter, with an inside diameter of 5mm – that’s about the size of your thumb nail. They are a great stepping stone to help children become more co-ordinated and eventually move on to using Midi Beads.

Mini Beads

These are the smallest size Hama Beads, requiring steady fingers and usually tweezers! Mini Beads are 3mm in length, with a 2mm diameter and 1mm inside diameter – not even half the size of a grain of rice! They are designed for ages 10 plus – but are sometimes too fiddly even for adults. As a result of their tiny size, Mini Beads produce the most detailed designs.
